Placement experience-4

Placement experience at Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (off campus) by Venkatesh.S

1) Written test (all objective type,no negative marks)
It consisted of
a) Aptitude test
55 minutes-55 questions
b) Domain test(core)
60 minutes -60 questions
Out of 42000 candidates,2500 were selected for the GD.On the GD day, I had the “engineering ethics “semester exam. The exam was from 10AM to 12:30PM . The GD was scheduled at 1:30 PM in a hotel .I and my friend Sandeep Tiwari, who had got selected had to rush the exam, finished it by 11:40AM and started for the off –campus placements.
2) Group Discussion cum interview (held in a 5 star hotel)
a) Group discussion:
A passage was given to read for 5 minutes.I got the topic on “Reality shows-good or bad”.The GD started like a street water-fight in hot summer.(the HR had to bear all that!)I spoke with a stand ,“reality shows are good”, facing stiff arguments, fired by some outside college guys in the panel.
Having quoted examples from local channel reality shows and also some famous personalities nation wide who are products of reality shows,I had my role done.At last the HR gave a chance to those who did not speak and it ended well.Even after that, some one spoke uncontrollably ,only to be asked to stop and move out of the GD hall!
TIPS :
1)Take a stand (for/against/neutral)depending on the topic given.
2) In a GD,do not drain out all the content that you have in a single occasion.
3) Make others speak.
4) When the GD reaches a saturation, release the rest of the data that you have and this captivates the one judging the GD.
4) Be aware and time conscious in an Off-campus/All-India level GD ,because the GD can be very dynamic as there are different students from different colleges .
5) Listen carefully to other’s key points and you may take notes (this will help you summarize the GD at the end if asked to).

b) Interview :
The company gave a form to be filled and that’s the resume for them.I was the last one to be interviewed on that day.The interview started at 7 PM and ended at 7 :30 PM.The panel consisted of 2 members, one general HR and the other technicalHR(both Hindi-natived).The general HR had begun interviewing and left half-way.Then came a shot-shell of technical questions. Here we go.

GEN.HR (GENERAL HR) : Good evening.so you are eh..eh..Ven..kat..esh,production engg.?
I : Yes sir.
GEN.HR (looking at the resume) : from An..na university…?

GEN.HR : Are you from Tamil Nadu?Ready to work in North India?
I : Yes sir,I’m ready.
(The gen. HR had a thorough scrutiny of my resume form and then left…Its tech.HR thereafter).
TECH.HR : What are your areas of interest?
I : TQM, Abrasive jet machining and Heat Treatment of steel.
TECH.HR : Write down all the heat treatment processes.
(I wrote all the processes but missed quenching in that. The tech HR pointed out that.)
TECH.HR : Why did you miss quenching?
I : I forgot sir because I had my semester exam in the morning and it’s
7PM already.That may be I think sir.
TECH.HR : Explain all the processes one by one.
(I explained each one)
TECH . HR : What is solution annealing? How is it done?
I : Sorry sir,I ‘m not clear about that.

TECH . HR : hmmm…what is forced cooling?
I : cooling with any external device,sir.
TECH . HR : what devices?
I :fan,blower,etc.sir
TECH . HR :Tell the blower equation.
I :Sorry sir,in production engineering .we haven’t read on
blowers.
TECH.HR : Ok. ..are you strong in thermodynamics?
I : A little is only dealt sir, mainly all basics.
(Thermodynamics was of rapid –fire type.what are isotropic ,isobaric, isochoric, polytropic processes.Questions and immediate answering sort of…)
TECH.HR : Explain open,closed and isolated systems.
(I explained)
TECH.HR : Give examples.
(I answered)
TECH.HR : you said TQM…..what is quality?
I : Quality is delivery of products or services at the right time
according to customer requirements.
TECH .HR : Explain the product quality testing techniques.
I :destructive methods like hardness Tech.
impact,tensile,torsion,…nondestructive methods like
radiography,ultrasonic,magnetic resonance,die penetrant methods sir.
TECH. HR : Explain the principle of Ultrasonic testing.
(I answered)
(Then there was a casual talk on my IPT Experience.I explained that……suddenly a phone call to HR… his colleague on phone who wanted to know the hotel’s address and wanted to reach there. The HR gave the phone to me and asked me to direct him. I did so.)
TECH .HR :Thanks venkatesh.we ‘ll let u know the results soon.
